The Language of Women (In response to The Language of Men)

Dawn tearfully pressed the speed dial.
Carrie picked up on the first ring.
Dawn: "He's such a jerk."
Carrie: "I told you so, honey."
Dawn: "I just want us to be happy."
Carrie: "I'll be right over. Start a pot of coffee."
Dawn: "Don't forget the Haagen-Daz. I've got spoons."

Bosses

Our chubby boss stepped to the podium to accept his "Making A Difference" award. The employees in the audience knew his difference. He was disloyal to his workers and often browbeat them. "Who could be so stupid to nominate such a monster?" His boss smiled as she handed him his award.

The Chase

He paused, knelt down, and touched the ground softly. He lifted his
head and sniffed the cold air.

"It's been through here."

His companion said, "Uh, no kidding. Why don't we follow the bloody
footprints? There in the snow? Nimrod."

They did. It didn't end well for any of them.

Blue jeans with holes in the knees and a soft white shirt. Who knew those were the clothes of a hero? My hero. Sent to save me from my worst, most wicked enemy--myself. Not with a shining sword, but with sweet whispers. Salty sex. And real love. Thank you.

The Wholeness of a Broken Heart

She knew that it would happen, anticipated it. It was like waiting for the other shoe to fall, but taking an eternity. The words still sounded in her mind. "I've met someone else, he makes me feel alive again." All she could remember thinking was "he?" She suspected it always.

forgets

I went from the kitchen to get it from the bedroom.sixteen steps and then i thought"what have i come for".Trace my steps back and look round the kitchen. Ithought it was only me who did this but soon i found lots of others had this problem.

Signing Your Life Away

She gripped the logo emblazoned pen tightly with twitching sweaty fingers. Her pen hovered a centimeter above the paper. Signing would change her life forever. Seven years of penny pinching spent in one stroke of the pen. Though heartbreaking, the house was worth it, so she set pen to paper.

One Short Life

One fetus within me
One newborn who adores me
One toddler with an infinite curiousity
One teenager who knows everything
One talk left unspoken
One bad influence
One time
One time too many
One knock at the door
One funeral I never imagined attending
One short life

Reflections on a Summer Eventide

The red sun slid below the tree line. The horses quietly grazed. I drove home - windows, moon roof wide-open, tree frogs, insects a cacophonous symphony. Past the farmer’s fallow field flickering with fireflies, a lone silhouette of a deer warily watched. Iraq war? My shame red as the sun.

The Last Pond

Not their usual stop for frog snacks but he could sense her pain labored flight from the last pond. The injured wing would soon ground her leaving her exposed to the unspeakable part of the food chain. Soul mates for life their beaks touched in love as he offered a frog.

Cursed!

The headlight beams race across my bedroom wall as I contemplate the nature of my curse. The cold steel of the gun feels hot against my temple. My traitor trigger-finger will not move, the utter inevitability of my continued existence weighs on me like a mountain of fool’s gold. Shit!

Counting My Blessings

Seven hours far from my own daylight a man pumps water from his basement. A pipe has broken. He’s young, handsome and wise.
He’s my only dream for years now.
He says ‘count your blessings’. As I start to, he drifts away. The day he’ll stay, I’ll count my blessings.

The Lament of W

Cheney’s screwing with me again. The Oval Office is
like a chamber of horrors! I never wanted this,
father wanted this, not me. Creepy CIA bastard, he
set me up as a puppet and now all the movie stars hate
me. I just wanted to meet Alec Baldwin. Stupid Americans!

The same things, the same people
The rising panic, the suffocation
…..is this all there is?
“I’m sick of waiting for you!” she screams to her nonexistent other half, to anyone who is listening….
Leaning out the window, seeing people laughing
Looking, she feels empty….
“When will my life begin?”

He and He

He saw him sitting on the bus. He and he made eye contact. A vibe was struck. He and he got off at the next stop. They went into a dark alley became very intimate. He and he left the alley and walked in different directions without a word.

Clinging

She watches the movie, sitting on the floor with snacks. The theme plays, ukulele and unintelligible words, the same every time. It sounds like sunshine. She curls up around it, under it, basks in it.
It's the only prayer she knows. It's hope against the mundane.

I was standing at the front. I turned, and there she was, at the door. Time froze. She was moving
towards me. That is what she was supposed to do. I don't remember the audience rising to their feet...

She floated towards me for what seemed an eternity. She's mine!

Plane Fuel

As we were preparing for takeoff on the tourist plane. I asked the pilot why the fuel gauge was nearly on empty.
He said it was for safety reasons. A mishap would cause very little fuel to burn.
Later, sketchy reports of the crash said there was a fuel problem.

The Pinnacle of his Life

He took the snap and turned to his left. Both linebackers stepped towards the fullback. He pivoted 180 degrees and pulled the ball back. The defensive end was covering the pitch. The seas parted and the crowd roared as he ran on air for 80 yards. 10 seconds of heaven…

Auburn Revisited

It was a memorial service, remembrance of Ken and Rene. I offered the philodendron that had outlived its owner to the daughter. I was an ex-daughter-in-law, with auburn hair; she had let hers go natural. The present, now the past, was a green gift promising a color-filled future.
