Plane Fuel

As we were preparing for takeoff on the tourist plane. I asked the pilot why the fuel gauge was nearly on empty.
He said it was for safety reasons. A mishap would cause very little fuel to burn.
Later, sketchy reports of the crash said there was a fuel problem.
