I brushed his eternally sleeping eyelids, gently cleaning off the ashes that had settled there. His
skin crackled like dried leaves. I recoiled. I cried. My tears disappeared into the thirsty membranes of his cheek. I did not know him but my tears were heartfelt just the same.
